Social networking giant Facebook is currently creating a smartwatch that is intended to be sold next year. According to a report from The Information, the Android-based smartwatch has messaging, health, and fitness features. However, there is no information if the company created the device to run Google Wear’s OS. Facebook has shown no interest in creating wellness and fitness devices, but the company currently has records of wearable devices such as virtual reality (VR) headsets. Additionally, Facebook is working on having its own operating system.
The new smartwatch is Facebook’s effort to expand its consumer hardware, and the company has more than 6,000 employees working under its Reality Labs Division, tasked with experimental initiatives. The device will be included in Facebook’s list of other wearable devices such as the Oculus VR headsets and Portal video chat. The company is also working on branded Ray-Ban smart glasses that are scheduled to be available later this year and a research project for augmented reality (AR) glasses named Project Aria.
