Government-owned car manufacturer, SAIC Motor, now has sold more cars than Tesla-made vehicles in China. Last January, 25,778 Hong Guang Minis from SAIC Motor were sold compared to 13,843 cars by Tesla. The electric car costs 28,000 yuan or $4,465 which is eight times cheaper than Tesla’s cheapest model. Other companies are also starting to see a rise in their sales since the government became more serious in fighting pollution in the country. Chinese start-up companies such as Nio, Li Auto, and XPeng are becoming Tesla’s competitors as well. It may be behind Tesla in terms of battery, range, and efficiency but its simplicity and low price have made it one of China’s most common “new energy” vehicles.
