The Cabinet has authorized the bill that lowers the age of adulthood in Japan last March 2018. This bill equalizes the legal age of marriage and lower the legal age of voting and signing of fixed-term contracts. This includes allowing 18-year-olds to have mobile phones and credit cards without their guardians’ consent. However, young adults are still prohibited to smoke, drink and gamble until they turn 20 years old.

Many people are against passing this bill for some reasons. Some argue that businesses that can benefit from this may exploit young adults. Excessive credit card purchases and being indebted on personal loans are possible examples of these problems. However, the Education Ministry, the Justice Ministry, and the Consumer Affairs Agency are planning to raise awareness about the responsibilities that goes along with the legal changes.
