An animated film regarding the bombings of Nagasaki and Hiroshima is in progress, entitled “Hiroshima – The Last Rose of Summer”. The production staff seek to complete the movie by summer 2020, which also falls on the 75th anniversary of the two Japanese cities’ bomb attacks. The film got its title from “The Last Rose of Summer”, an Irish folk song and the basis for “Niwa no Chigusa”, a renowned Japanese tune. The animated movie focuses on how the romantic relationship between an American prisoner of war and a Japanese nursing student falls apart because of the bombings.

The movie was made in honor of the late Japanese-American director, Jimmy Murakami, with the assistance of a Hiroshima historian, Shigeaki Mori. The characters were designed and drawn by a famous manga artist, Kaiji Kawaguchi. Kawaguchi had said, “This is my first anime work. I’d like to do my best”.
