According to the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare, the number of “Hafu” has increased since the Heisei Era began (1989-present). Hafu (half) is a term used for Japanese with mixed-race family background. One of them is Monica Okoye who is of Nigerian-Japanese descent.

Okoye, 19, is a member of the Japanese women’s basketball team and played during the Women’s Basketball World Cup last September 26, 2018. The survey showed that most of the hafu are good at different disciplines in sports.

In Heisei era, not only Japanese political and economic aspects have changed but also the idea of being a “Japanese”. Now, more Japanese are open to people who have mixed-descent.
