Argentines have turned to cryptocurrency to cover their basic needs, fearing another economic crisis. Three new Argentine businesses currently offer crypto-based transaction debit cards. One of these companies was established in a Patagonian town where 40 percent of businesses accept Bitcoin as payment. Other ways the Argentine government has become more involved in the economy have boosted Bitcoin acceptance. For example, it is cheaper to have an energy-intensive Bitcoin mining business because of the low electricity cost. Argentina’s inflation has been a cause of concern for years, with an annual rate of more than 50 percent. The country’s financial crisis began in the late 1990s, when bank accounts were blocked and people’s savings vanished suddenly. The government has taken a relaxed attitude regarding the Bitcoin boom. However, the Central Bank has issued a warning against crypto-based scams. Although Bitcoin use is still in its early stages, it is quickly increasing, which is cause for alarm.
