The historical drama “Shogun,” a compelling story set in feudal Japan, received 25 nominations on July 17, 2024, leading this year’s contenders for television’s Emmy Awards. The first season of the FX network series will compete for best drama, the highest accolade at the Emmys, alongside the final season of Netflix’s British royal saga “The Crown” and Apple TV+’s “The Morning Show.” Another FX show, “The Bear,” earned 23 nominations, the most for a comedy series, depicting the transformation of a Chicago sandwich shop into a world-class dining destination. Other nominees in the comedy category include ABC’s “Abbott Elementary” and HBO’s “Hacks.” Additionally, “Baby Reindeer,” a Netflix series about a bartender stalked by a customer, garnered a nomination for best limited series. Competitors in the limited series category include Netflix’s psychological thriller “Ripley,” FX’s “Fargo,” and HBO’s “True Detective: Night Country.”

Netflix led all networks with 107 nominations, followed by FX with 93 and HBO with 91. The winners of the Emmys, the most prestigious honors in television, will be announced at a ceremony broadcast live on ABC on September 15. The nominees were chosen by nearly 22,000 members of the Television Academy, comprising performers, directors, and producers. This year’s awards saw an increase in representation, with significant nominations for women of color in the comedy actress category and indigenous actors. First-time nominees include five actors from “Shogun,” such as Hiroyuki Sanada and Anna Sawai. Noteworthy nominees also include Jodie Foster for “True Detective,” Jeremy Allen White for “The Bear,” and Jean Smart for “Hacks.”
