On August 8, people in central Copenhagen were happy to see Samyang Foods’ Buldak instant ramen noodles back in stores. These noodles from South Korea were banned in Denmark in June because they had too much capsaicin, the ingredient that makes chili peppers hot. Eating too much capsaicin can make you feel sick, cause vomiting, raise blood pressure, and even make you feel intoxicated. The ban affected three types of noodles, which were thought to be too dangerous, especially for children and older adults. After checking, the authorities allowed two of the three types to be sold again. To celebrate, Samyang Foods held a special event in Copenhagen’s harbor. They used a ferry with the company’s bright-red logo to serve the noodles to social media influencers and fans. The influencers tried the noodles and shared their thoughts online as the ferry moved through the city. Even though Danish authorities warned about the dangers of social media challenges that encourage eating very spicy noodles, people were excited about the return. Locals, like Phillip, were happy to have their favorite ramen back and admitted to buying extra supplies during the ban.
