In Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, a traditional beauty treatment called “weyba tis” is becoming popular among young people. This treatment involves sitting in a sauna while covered in honey and butter. The heat is adjusted by smoke from burning twigs and herbs. People believe it helps with muscle pain and skin issues. Saba Yilma, who felt better after visiting the Fana Weyba spa and salon, represents the growing interest in this old practice. Fana Gebremedhin, the spa owner, brought this tradition from her hometown of Raya in the Tigray region over twenty years ago. She is now preparing to open her third spa in Addis Ababa due to increasing demand. During the treatment, you sit on a chair above a small fire made from twigs and herbs that produces soothing smoke. Early research suggests the weyba tree, used in the treatment, might have health benefits. Animal studies show it could help with immune system problems, but this is not yet confirmed for humans. Local officials and regular users support the treatment, noting improvements in well-being and skin glow.
