U.S. fashion designer Tommy Hilfiger recently created custom suits for the K-pop group Stray Kids, which they wore to the Met Gala in May. This made Stray Kids, an eight-member South Korean boy band, the first K-pop group to attend the famous Manhattan fashion event. Stray Kids also serve as brand ambassadors for Tommy Hilfiger, who noted the significance of the event for his brand. A special label, “Tommy Hilfiger with Stray Kids,” was created for this occasion, marking it as one of the brand’s most exciting projects. Hilfiger also said that the Met Gala appearance of Stray Kids received a lot of media attention, mainly because of K-pop’s global popularity, making his brand one of the most talked about at the event. K-pop idols are getting more involved in luxury fashion because brands want to reach their big, loyal fanbases. Last year, about 30 K-pop stars, including BLACKPINK’s Lisa and BTS’ Jin, became ambassadors for top brands like Versace and Gucci. Alison Bringe from Launchmetrics said K-pop stars often bring more media attention than Western celebrities. South Korea is now a key player in major fashion events like Paris Fashion Week.
