A new program in Ilfov County, Romania, aims to teach empathy to fifth- and sixth-graders through animal awareness classes. Starting in November, students will interact with live animals, including a rescue hen named Rodica and a duck called Bubbles. They will also visit animal shelters to meet animals that have faced challenges, such as those with disabilities. The program, supported by experts including the county’s animal protection adviser, hopes to promote kindness towards animals and reduce bullying in schools. Early results show success, with teachers noticing more engaged students. 11-year-old Ana-Maria Neagu, for example, developed a strong connection with chickens, while Yasmina Dinu empathized with Rodica’s past struggles. Sorin Sirbeanu, the program coordinator, said the hands-on approach has encouraged emotional growth and responsibility. This initiative is an innovative effort to address social issues, especially in a country with limited educational resources and high rural school dropout rates.
