Scientists in Colombia have created a new food supplement to protect bees from the harmful effects of pesticides. Bees are vital for pollination, which supports healthy ecosystems and food production. Unfortunately, pesticides used in farming often damage bees’ brains, affecting their movement and memory. Researchers at Rosario University in Bogota, along with the University of Arizona and Universidad Javeriana, developed the supplement to help bees resist these effects. The plant-based formula includes flavonoids, natural compounds known for their health benefits, which shield bees from neurological damage.

The team first tested the supplement in a laboratory. Bees were fed the formula while sedated and placed in small tubes. The results were encouraging, as the supplement successfully prevented the usual damage caused by pesticides. Testing has now expanded to a university apiary to observe its effectiveness in real-world conditions. Juan Jose Ovalle, a university student involved in the project, confirmed the supplement’s protective effects but noted that further improvements are needed. This innovation offers hope for bee populations, which play a critical role in maintaining biodiversity and global food supplies. While more work is necessary, the development of this supplement is a significant step toward addressing the dangers pesticides pose to these essential pollinators.
