A new transportation service for students, called Piggyback Network, is helping families in Chicago. The service was created by Ismael El-Amin in 2023 to solve problems with student transport. Piggyback Network lets parents share rides for their children attending the same school. The idea began when El-Amin saw his daughter meet a schoolmate on a crowded highway. The need for this service comes from fewer students using traditional school buses. A survey by the Federal Highway Administration showed that only 28% of students used school buses in 2023, down from 36% in 2017. This drop is due to problems like bus driver shortages and challenges in transporting students to schools that are farther away. In Chicago, only 17,000 of 325,000 students qualify for bus services, so many families are searching for affordable alternatives.

Piggyback Network allows parents to book rides for about 80 cents per mile. The platform has features like real-time tracking and secure password verification to keep students safe. While the service faces competition from companies like HopSkipDrive and Kango, its goal of making student transport more available remains important. Challenges such as growth and trust issues still need to be addressed.
