The Royal Mint has released a special coin collection to honor John Lennon, marking what would have been his 85th birthday. This tribute is part of the Royal Mint’s “music legends” series, which has also celebrated famous musicians like Paul McCartney, David Bowie, Queen, the Rolling Stones, and Shirley Bassey. The coin shows a detailed portrait of Lennon, based on a famous photo taken by Bob Gruen in 1974. In the image, Lennon is shown in profile on the roof of his New York penthouse. His name appears on the left side of the coin, while the word “Imagine” is written on the right, a reference to his well-known 1971 song and album.

John Lennon is remembered not only for his music but also for his efforts to promote peace. Even decades after his tragic death in 1980, he continues to inspire people around the world. The coins became available on March 17, 2025, through the Royal Mint’s website. They are sold in different metals, including gold, and in various colors. Prices range from £18.50 ($24) for a five-pound coin to £6,420 ($8,330) for a 200-pound coin. While these coins are considered legal money, their high value makes them unlikely to be used in daily purchases. Rebecca Morgan from the Royal Mint said Lennon’s impact as an artist and peace activist still influences people today.
