U.S. health authorities have reported a concerning increase in injuries caused by the misuse of nitrous oxide, commonly referred to as laughing gas. This chemical, traditionally employed as a sedative in dental offices and hospitals, has been increasingly misused by consumers seeking euphoric effects. Recently, flavored nitrous oxide products, such as Cosmic Gas, Galaxy Gas, and MassGass, have gained popularity, often appearing in colorful packaging at gas stations, vape shops, and online platforms. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a public warning stating that inhaling this gas can induce dangerously low blood pressure, potentially resulting in unconsciousness and severe injuries. Poison control centers have also reported a rise in emergency calls involving individuals who collapsed following nitrous oxide misuse.

The FDA attributed this surge to flavored products marketed for culinary use, which are frequently misused despite disclaimers advising against inhalation. Videos on social media have showcased young people engaging in recreational inhalation, further contributing to the trend. Although some U.S. states have imposed age restrictions on nitrous oxide sales, there are no nationwide regulations controlling consumer access. The FDA continues to regulate the gas as a medical product when utilized in healthcare settings; however, its authority over products marketed for culinary purposes remains ambiguous. Health officials have emphasized the need for heightened public awareness regarding the hazardous consequences of nitrous oxide misuse and its potential to compromise vital bodily functions.
