After dangerous wildfires hit Los Angeles in early January 2025, a stray dog named Jackie was rescued from a crowded shelter. She was at risk of being put down, so she was flown to Juneau, Alaska, as part of a program to help animals find new homes. Jackie arrived in mid-February but ran away from her new home on the very first day. She disappeared into a forested area near a busy road, and since then, her story has touched many people. Despite several rescue attempts, no one has been able to catch her. People are growing more worried now that black bears are coming out of hibernation in the area. Juneau Animal Rescue and local animal control have tried many ways to find her, like setting food traps and using infrared cameras at night. Officer Thom Young-Bayer says they are slowly making progress. Jackie, a German shepherd-husky mix, has been spotted more often and seems less afraid. She hides using moss and stays away from light, making her hard to see. Volunteers continue searching, determined to bring her home safely.
