A genetic research project started in 2021 at Fann Hospital in Dakar, Senegal. The purpose is to help people with rare diseases in West Africa get early tests and treatment. The study is led by Dr. Pedro Rodriguez Cruz. It is a collaboration between a local university and a science center in Spain. Blood samples are sent to Barcelona. There, scientists look at the DNA to find problems. About 1,300 people from Senegal and nearby countries have joined the study. Many rare diseases in Africa are not found early because testing is limited.

The study has found serious conditions like Duchenne muscular dystrophy. These diseases make it hard to move, breathe, or walk. In some cases, early medicine helped people feel better. One woman started walking again after getting vitamin B2. Some children got better with special medicine. This research receives support from global health groups. Experts say collecting DNA is essential to give fair health services. But there are problems, like few doctors and weak hospitals. The study gives hope to help more people in the future.
