A sea lion named Ronan lives at the Long Marine Laboratory in Santa Cruz, California. In 2025, a study in Scientific Reports showed that Ronan can move her head with music. Ronan is 15 years old and was rescued many years ago. In 2013, scientists saw that Ronan could follow a beat. This made Ronan one of the few animals that can do this. Ronan likes disco music, like “Boogie Wonderland.” Scientists have studied Ronan for over ten years and said her skills are still very strong. The goal of the study was to see if she still had this talent.

In the study, Ronan listened to drumbeats at three speeds: 112, 120, and 128 beats per minute. Two of the speeds were new. Scientists tested Ronan’s cognitive flexibility, or how well she can change and learn. Ronan did better than ten college students. The hypothesis said animals do not need to copy sounds to feel rhythm. Ronan is now a distinguished example of animal music ability. Her case shows lifelong learning and may help in more remarkable studies on sea lions.
