A 29-year-old man from Oregon is sailing alone across the Pacific Ocean with his cat. Oliver Widger began his trip to Hawaii in April after leaving his job. He bought a sailboat, learned how to sail using online videos, and prepared for a long sea journey. Widger shares his trip on TikTok and Instagram under the name “Sailing with Phoenix.” His videos have gained more than one million followers. Widger said he changed his lifestyle after a serious health condition. He now lives full-time on the boat with his cat, Phoenix. His posts show daily life at sea, ocean animals, boat problems, and peaceful scenes. The U.S. Coast Guard in Hawaii used his story to remind people about sailing safety. Lt. Cmdr. Jesse Harms said Widger uses an emergency radio beacon, called an EPIRB. This device helps rescuers find people during an emergency. Harms also said it is important to wear life jackets, check the weather, and protect sea animals. Although Widger is not an expert sailor, he has made safety plans. He carries a satellite phone and brings supplies for his cat. His journey is popular and highlights the importance of safety at sea.
