The eighth annual World Bee Day was held around the world on May 20, 2025, to raise awareness about the serious decline in bee populations. The date was chosen to honor Anton Janša, a beekeeping expert from 18th-century Slovenia. In Cologne, Germany, around 400,000 bees were seen working in rooftop hives, but scientists continue to express concern. Experts have identified several causes of bee population decline, including insecticides, climate change, habitat loss, parasites, and a lack of food variety. Studies show that more than 75% of crops rely on pollination, and bees provide around €2 billion in annual benefits to German agriculture.

More actions are being taken to protect pollinators in both cities and the countryside. Environmental groups and beekeepers are working on different projects to support honeybees and wild bees. Matthias Roth, head of the Cologne Beekeepers Association, said that his group installed special nesting boxes for solitary bees that do not live in hives. However, he also warned that these efforts alone may not stop the population drop. Experts say improving biodiversity in cities is also important, especially where green spaces are limited. While rooftop beehives show some progress, long-term success will depend on sustainable farming, education, and better environmental laws. World Bee Day continues to remind the public about the key role of pollinators in nature and farming.
