Florida may start black bear hunting again for the first time since 2015. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) agreed to the plan in a vote on May 21, 2025, in Ocala. The hunt is planned from December 6 to 28, 2025. There may be hunts every year after that. The FWC says the hunt is needed because there are now about 4,000 bears in the state. More bears are seen in areas where people live. In the last nine months, Marion County had over 100 reports about bears.

In 2015, a bear hunt was stopped early because over 300 bears were killed in two days. This time, only 187 people will get a permit in a random draw. Each person can hunt one bear. It is not allowed to hunt baby bears or mothers with babies. Hunting with dogs and special food on big private lands is allowed. Some people support the hunt to control the bear population. Others think safer ways, like managing garbage better, are more kind and helpful. More than 13,000 people gave their opinion online. About 75 percent do not want the hunt. A final decision will be made in August 2025.
