In April 2025, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service suggested adding the Fish Lake Valley tui chub to the endangered species list. This unusual fish is small and olive-colored. It now lives in only one pond in Nevada, near the California border. Before, it lived in six places. Experts said the main reason for the problem is too much water use for farming work like growing alfalfa. In 2023, the Center for Biological Diversity took legal action. After an agreement, the government started to study the fish’s condition. Other problems include climate change, land use, and harmful species.

If the fish joins the endangered list, it will receive full protection. People cannot kill, move, or sell it. Environmental groups said the fish is important to the desert ecosystem. A leader said that losing it may hurt the wetlands and other animals. A new plan may also change the law. Some groups said this may lower the help the fish needs.
