In April 2025, health experts in the United States gave a clear message: sunscreen is important for all skin colors. This advice came from doctors at the University of California and Baylor College of Medicine. The American Cancer Society said that dark skin has more melanin but it is not strong enough to stop all sun damage. The sun can still cause sunburn, wrinkles, dark spots, and skin cancer. A study found that white people get skin cancer more often. But serious types like melanoma are hard to detect early in Black and Hispanic people because they appear on the hands and feet.
Experts gave tips on how to use sunscreen. Sunscreen with at least SPF 30 should be applied every two hours. This is more important after swimming or sweating. Only a small amount is often used, but two fingers’ worth is best for the face. Some sunscreens can help stop discoloration on darker skin. Clothes with UPF and hats can give more safety. UV rays can even pass through windows, so doctors say sunscreen is also needed indoors. This advice is seen as practical and helpful for keeping skin safe and healthy.
