On June 27, 2025, scientists gave new details about rocks in northern Quebec, Canada. These rocks are in the Nuvvuagittuq Greenstone Belt, near Hudson Bay. One rock may be about 4.16 billion years old. This makes it one of the oldest rocks on Earth. Before, scientists had different results, such as 4.3 billion or 3.8 billion years. Now, two new tests gave the same age. This result is more credible and helps scientists know more about Earth’s early time.

The Earth is about 4.5 billion years old, but many old rocks are gone. Tectonic movement broke most of them. Some ancient rocks are still in Canada, like in the Acasta Gneiss Complex. These new rocks might be even older. The study is very significant for science. Local leaders from the Inukjuak tribe want to protect the area. They stopped people from taking rocks, as some were sold online. A new park is planned. It will help with preservation, protect the environment, and show respect for the local culture and science rules.
