In October 2023, the Gulf Coast Primate Sanctuary opened in Perkinston, Mississippi, about 50 kilometers north of the Gulf Coast. This place is 15 acres big and was made to help animals that were once pets. Some people could not care for them anymore. Many animals now live there, like spider monkeys, squirrel monkeys, kinkajous, and rescue dogs. The sanctuary gives them a peaceful, safe place to stay. It also helps military veterans who have PTSD. April Stewart, a veteran, said working with animals helped her feel better. John Richard, another veteran, said his bond with a monkey was more helpful than his medical treatment for 20 years.

Veterans and volunteers help every day. They clean, feed, and care for the animals. These daily tasks give them a sense of purpose, fulfillment, and hope. The animals live in rooms with air-conditioning and open spaces outside. Stewart and her team advocated against keeping monkeys as pets. Their goal is to build a supportive, restorative, and connected place for both people and animals.
