In October 2023, the Gulf Coast Primate Sanctuary officially opened in Perkinston, Mississippi, about 50 kilometers north of the Gulf Coast. This 15-acre sanctuary was built to give a permanent home to animals that were once pets but could not be cared for anymore. Many animals now live there, including spider monkeys, squirrel monkeys, kinkajous, rescue dogs, and other species. The primary goal is to give these animals a safe and peaceful home. But it also helps military veterans who have post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). April Stewart, a veteran from the Air Force and the founder, said that working with animals helped her manage PTSD. Army veteran John Richard shared that his bond with a monkey named Louie was more helpful than any treatment he received in 20 years.
The sanctuary depends on veterans and other volunteers who help with cleaning, feeding, and caring for the animals. These daily tasks give them a sense of resilience, fulfillment, and purpose. The animals stay in air-conditioned rooms and outdoor spaces. The sanctuary is managed by a foundation started by Stewart, her husband, and two veterinarians. Stewart strongly advocated against keeping monkeys as pets. The team hopes to create a harmonious, restorative, and supportive place where people and animals can grow through rehabilitation and feel more connected to nature and life.
