OpenAI has released GPT-5, the newest version of the artificial intelligence program used in ChatGPT. This update comes more than two years after GPT-4 was released in March 2023. The launch happened at the same time as another company, Anthropic, introduced a new version of its chatbot Claude, and Google worked on its own AI tools. Microsoft, a partner of OpenAI, said it will add GPT-5 to its Copilot assistant. OpenAI described the model as an important step toward a type of AI that can do many jobs better than humans. The company said GPT-5 has better safety to stop false or harmful answers. Tests showed it is better than GPT-4, and experts said its design can help future development.

The model is now available with limits for free ChatGPT accounts. Early tests showed it is strong in computer coding, an area where Anthropic is also active. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said it can give expert-level answers in many subjects. The company is valued at $300 billion but faces legal challenges, including a case from co-founder Elon Musk. Experts said competition in AI is increasing, and prices for AI products may go down in the future.
