In July 1943, a book titled Your Child, His Family, and Friends was borrowed from the San Antonio Public Library in Texas. In June 2025, the same book was returned after almost eighty-two years. It was found in Oregon inside a box of old belongings and was connected to Maria del Socorro Aldrete Flores, who had taken it when moving to Mexico City for work at the United States Embassy. A letter told the story of the return. At that time, the fine for late books was three cents per day, which would equal almost sixteen thousand dollars today. The library canceled fines in 2021, so the return was accepted without charge. The case received notable attention for its history.
The book stayed in good condition, showing the durable nature of printed works. It was displayed at the Central Library until August before being used for fundraising. Officials said the case was unusual but not the longest. Guinness World Records showed a book returned after 288 years. The event showed the prestige of libraries, the immense value of books, and their remarkable link across generations.
