Matcha is a special green tea powder from Japan. It was first used in the Japanese tea ceremony, but today it is popular around the world. People now drink matcha lattes and eat matcha cakes, chocolate, and ice cream. Government records show that matcha production grew from 1,452 tons in 2008 to 4,176 tons in 2023. In the last ten years, Japan’s tea exports have become more than twice as large, and the United States has bought about one-third of the total, mostly matcha. The Japanese agricultural ministry has given farmers money, machines, and soil support to help them produce matcha instead of regular green tea called sencha. However, many farmers are older, and worker shortages could make production more difficult in the future.Specialists say matcha is popular because it is healthy and easy to use in many foods. Minoru Handa, the head of a tea store in Tokyo, said matcha powder can be mixed into desserts and drinks. The Global Japanese Tea Association explained that cheaper matcha should be used in lattes, while the best quality should be kept for ceremonies. Today, matcha is both a traditional Japanese drink and an important world product.
