Cuicuilco is an ancient archaeological site found in southern Mexico City. It was once the center of a flourishing civilization between 400 and 200 B.C. The area is now surrounded by modern roads and buildings but still shows a significant part of Mexico’s long history. The site has a large circular pyramid believed to be used for fire god rituals. The National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) organizes monthly tours that cost around 260 pesos. Each tour is led by archaeologists who share informative and detailed facts about how ancient people lived. The word “Cuicuilco” means “the place where songs and dances are made” in the Nahua language, showing its deep link to art and community.
INAH began guided tours in 1957 to make archaeological research more meaningful and open to the public. Historians say these tours are a memorable way to connect the past and present and to appreciate Mexico’s cultural roots.
