Archaeologists found 16 very old canoes under Lake Mendota in Madison. The canoes were discovered near old travel paths that Indigenous groups used many years ago. The oldest canoe is about 5,200 years old. The lake area was shallow in ancient times, so people stopped there while moving across the region. The place became a shared spot where canoes could be kept safe in the water.

Experts believe early travelers buried the canoes in soft lake soil to preserve the wood. This made it easier for people to navigate the lake at any time. The site sits close to a cultural locale that remains important to Native communities today. Scientists say the canoes show how people worked together in a moderate lake environment and used the water for travel and daily life.
