A lion and a bear rescued from illegal private captivity in northern Albania were moved to animal sanctuaries in Germany in early December 2025. The animals were a three-year-old lion named Erion and a two-year-old bear named Flora. Authorities in Tirana found the animals on a private property where wild animals were kept illegally. The rescue was carried out by the animal welfare group FOUR PAWS with help from Albania’s National Forestry Agency. Officials discovered the animals after online videos showed a lion on the property. The case showed ongoing problems with illegal wildlife keeping in Albania.

Before transport, veterinarians gave medicine to the animals to keep them calm and safe. The journey to Germany took about 70 hours and passed through several countries. On December 13, 2025, Erion arrived at a wild animal sanctuary in southeastern Germany. Flora was taken to a bear sanctuary in northern Germany. Health checks showed that both animals were not healthy. Flora was very thin and had problems with her teeth. Erion had lost much of his mane, and the reason is still unknown. Animal welfare groups said stronger laws and better control are needed to protect wild animals.
