An ancient Roman house on Palatine Hill is opening to the public through a new virtual program. The site is called the House of the Griffins and will open on March 3. The house was discovered during excavations in the early 20th century and dates back to the Roman Republic period. Palatine Hill is near the Roman Forum and the Colosseum and was once home to wealthy citizens. The house was later covered when Emperor Domitian built a palace above it in the first century A.D. This helped protect the building. Archaeologists say the house is important because of its location, decoration, and good condition.

Visitors can see the house through a livestreamed tour led by a guide using a camera. The guide shows rooms that are hard to reach underground. This system helps protect the site by limiting the number of people inside. Experts explained that fewer visitors reduce damage from humidity and carbon dioxide. The house has wall paintings and floor mosaics with detailed designs. The restoration was supported by funding from the European Union. The project aims to reduce crowding at popular landmarks and help people learn more about ancient Roman life.
