North Korea is said to withdraw from the upcoming Tokyo Olympics because of worries about coronavirus infection among its athletes. North Korean officials declared that the country would not participate in this summer’s Games to “shield players from the world public health crisis triggered by Covid-19,” according to a study published on DPRK Sports, a state media outlet focusing on sports affairs. North Korea agreed to cut almost all ties with the rest of the world in 2020 in order to stop a coronavirus outbreak. Experts, however, disagree with Pyongyang’s argument that there hasn’t been a single case of Covid-19 in North Korea, but the country has not confirmed a major outbreak, and there are no signs that one has occurred. According to the Russian Embassy in Pyotrk, a significant number of foreign diplomats and humanitarian workers have also left the country in recent months, citing food shortages and extreme restrictions on everyday life.
