Australia has increased visa fees for international students by more than double, now charging A$1,600 instead of A$710. This change is because more people are moving to Australia, which has made it harder to find homes. It is part of the government’s plan to improve how people move there, focusing on being fair and efficient. Clare O’Neil, the Minister for Home Affairs, said the higher fees are to make sure education stays honest and to create a system where everyone is treated fairly. Recently, the government said 548,800 more people moved to Australia, up 60% from last year. Australian student visa fees are now higher than in the US or Canada, where they are about $185 and C$150 ($110) respectively. The government also wants fewer international students to stay long-term, with 150,000 new visas in 2022–2023. There are more rules now, like stricter English requirements, and more money is needed. Luke Sheehy, CEO of Universities Australia, worries these changes might make universities less important and hurt money from international students. International education adds A$36.4 billion to Australia’s economy each year.
