At the Palm Beach Zoo & Conservation Society in Florida, animals are being given special frozen treats to help them stay cool in the extremely hot weather. South Florida has been experiencing temperatures reaching the upper 90s Fahrenheit (mid-30s Celsius) with high humidity, making it feel over 100 degrees Fahrenheit (38 degrees Celsius). To assist the animals in managing the heat, zoo staff have introduced various cooling methods. For example, black bears enjoy large piles of ice and a chilled pool, while otters receive ice blocks and frozen fish. Tigers are given frozen cow bones in ice blocks and frozen goat milk, and they also swim to cool down. Giant tortoises, which are native to the Indian Ocean islands, get cool showers from a hose. The curator of animal experiences, Mike Terrell, noted that different activities are tested to determine what the animals prefer. Visitors, especially children, take pleasure in watching the animals cool off and play.
