Japan made history by winning the Olympic men’s foil team event for the first time at the Paris Games on Sunday. Japan won against Italy with a score of 45-36. Takahiro Shikine started the points, and Kazuki Iimura, who was fourth in the individual event, scored the final touches needed for the win. France won the bronze medal in this event, setting a new record for the most Olympic medals won by one country in a single Games since World War II. The match was very exciting, with Japan leading at first but Italy taking over. Iimura made seven important touches, and Yudai Nagano added five more. This is Japan’s fifth fencing medal and their second gold in Paris. The success is due to the help from their French coaches, Erwann Le Pechoux and Franck Boidin. France, with Enzo Lefort’s strong performance, won bronze and set a new record for medals.
