On September 19, Steven Ross, the scientific director of the company that made the Titan submersible, spoke to a U.S. Coast Guard panel. The Titan sadly imploded in June 2023 while trying to reach the Titanic wreck. Ross said that just days before this dive, the submersible had a problem. An issue with the platform caused passengers to be thrown around, which delayed their exit from the water by one hour. Stockton Rush, the co-founder and pilot of OceanGate, also hit part of the sub during this incident, but luckily, no one was hurt. Ross described this problem as uncomfortable for everyone involved. In her testimony, Renata Rojas, a mission specialist for OceanGate, shared a different view. She praised the staff’s skills and felt confident about the company’s efforts to explore the Titanic site. Rojas believed the company was clear about the risks and that she never felt unsafe. However, some witnesses expressed concerns, saying the company put profit before safety. Investigators continue to look into what caused Titan’s tragic implosion.
