A spacecraft was launched on October 7, 2024, marking a key advancement in planetary defense. The European Space Agency’s Hera spacecraft began its mission to the asteroid Dimorphos, which was hit by NASA’s Dart mission two years ago. Hera’s goal is to collect data and study the effectiveness of that collision in possibly deflecting asteroids that could pose a threat to Earth. This information will enhance future efforts to protect our planet. Hera will reach the asteroid system in 2026. Once there, it will make detailed observations using advanced scientific tools. Researchers plan to study the physical changes caused by the 2022 impact, focusing on whether a crater was formed or if the asteroid’s structure was significantly altered. The cloud of debris from the impact, which spread over a large area, presents a challenge as the spacecraft approaches. In addition to Hera’s observations, two small CubeSats will help study the asteroid more closely. This mission aims to provide valuable knowledge to improve Earth’s planetary defense strategies.
