Pug Rescue South Africa started in Johannesburg in 2010 to help pugs that were abandoned or not cared for properly. A couple began by taking in a few pugs, but they soon saw that many more needed help. Today, the rescue center cares for almost 200 pugs. Many were given up because their owners had money problems, health issues, or big life changes. Pugs have short noses, which can cause breathing problems, eye infections, and other health issues. Because of this, vet care is expensive. The rescue center spends about $40,000 each year to help the dogs. They rely on donations and volunteers to pay for medicine and treatment and find new homes for the pugs. The dogs follow a daily routine. They wake up early, play, get groomed, and eat meals made for their health needs. At night, they sleep in groups to stay safe. Sometimes, they fight, but the staff helps them get along. More and more pugs are being abandoned. Experts say people should learn about the breed before adopting. The rescue also promotes responsible pet care to prevent more cases of neglect.
