On April 13, 2025, Japan officially opened Expo 2025 in Osaka with the theme “Designing Future Society for Our Lives.” The event takes place on Yumeshima, a man-made island in Osaka Bay, and brings together about 180 countries, regions, and organizations. It aims to encourage global cooperation during a time of international challenges and unrest. Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba highlighted the importance of unity in today’s divided world following the pandemic.

A main attraction is the “Grand Ring,” a massive wooden structure that is 20 meters high and 2 kilometers around. It surrounds the exhibition area and represents global unity. The expo features more than 80 pavilions with innovative technology and cultural exhibits. However, Expo 2025 has faced problems. The weak yen caused material costs to rise, raising the total budget to 235 billion yen—almost double the original estimate. Building the Grand Ring took up about 14% of that. There have also been delays in pavilion construction, and only 9 million of the expected 14 million advance tickets have sold. Still, organizers hope to reach 28 million visitors by October 13. Emperor Naruhito hopes the event inspires young people to explore sustainable ideas and connect across cultures.
