On May 27, 2025, a young male elephant seal was seen in a town in South Africa. The seal, which weighed about two tons, was far from the ocean. The seal was found on a street in Gordon’s Bay, near Cape Town. The police and security staff tried to stop the seal by using cars. However, the seal kept walking and stopped near a shopping mall. Animal experts said the seal could get very tired and sick because it was too far from the sea. Elephant seals are usually seen in cold places far from South Africa, but young seals sometimes visit the coast during a special time called molting.

A group of animal experts and a city doctor helped the seal. They made the seal calm with medicine and moved it safely to a bay. The whole rescue took about nine hours. Many people worked together to help the seal and keep the town safe. Belinda Abraham from the Cape of Good Hope SPCA said that planning and teamwork were very important. The SPCA later showed a video of the seal going back to the ocean, showing the rescue was a success.
