On June 17, 2025, Egyptian officials announced a major archaeological discovery in the Dra Abu al-Naga necropolis in Luxor. Three tombs from the New Kingdom period (1550–1070 B.C.) were uncovered by local archaeologists. The tombs were identified as belonging to eminent individuals, based on inscriptions found inside. According to the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, the discovery comes ahead of the long-awaited full opening of the Grand Egyptian Museum, expected this summer. The museum plans to display more than 100,000 ancient items that represent the country’s rich history and cultural legacy.

The tombs belonged to respected figures such as Amum-em-Ipet, who worked in the estate of Amun during the Ramesside period; Baki, a grain silo supervisor; and a person known as “S,” who held multiple roles including temple supervisor, writer, and mayor of the northern oases. Amum-em-Ipet’s tomb contained damaged artwork of a funeral procession and banquet. Baki’s tomb featured a long corridor and an unfinished chamber, while “S” had a courtyard and halls showing incomplete construction. The Secretary-General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities emphasized the need for further research to interpret the inscriptions. Minister Sherif Fathi described the find as a monumental scientific achievement and said it could stimulate cultural tourism. Previous discoveries near Luxor, such as tombs and burial shafts from earlier periods, have confirmed the region’s profound archaeological value, attracting both researchers and international visitors.
