OpenAI has launched GPT-5, the fifth generation of the artificial intelligence model used in ChatGPT. The release comes more than two years after GPT-4 appeared in March 2023, during a time of strong global competition among AI developers. The launch took place alongside Anthropic’s release of a new version of its chatbot Claude and Google’s progress with its AI systems. Microsoft, a close partner of OpenAI, has announced plans to use GPT-5 in its Copilot assistant. Company leaders called the model an important step toward artificial general intelligence (AGI), a technology expected to perform better than humans in many economic tasks. OpenAI stated that GPT-5 includes new safety measures to reduce false or harmful information. Tests showed “modest but significant” improvements over GPT-4, and experts noted design changes that could support future advances.

GPT-5 is now available with usage limits for free ChatGPT accounts. Early demonstrations highlighted its coding abilities, a field where Anthropic is also active. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said the model can provide expert-level knowledge in many areas while being more reliable and safe. The company is seeking major investment to pay for the rising costs of advanced chips and data centers. Valued at $300 billion, OpenAI faces legal and regulatory issues, including a lawsuit from co-founder Elon Musk. Analysts at JPMorgan Chase warned that falling competitive advantages in the AI industry could lead to lower product prices.
