On Labor Day weekend, hikers on Huron Peak in Colorado had a surprise. A man dressed in an ice cream cone costume gave out free frozen treats at the top of the mountain. The man, who has not been identified, carried a 60-pound (27-kilogram) pack filled with ice cream sandwiches, bars, and dry ice. He climbed the 14,000-foot (4,267-meter) mountain, which is one of the tallest in the state. Many hikers heard about him while still climbing, and those who reached the summit said it was surprising and enjoyable. Blaine and Katie Griffin, and families such as Christopher Whitestone’s, said it was a special memory. On social media, groups of hikers called the man a hero and praised his unusual idea.

The event was also noted for its difficulty, because carrying heavy weight in thin air is very hard. Photos showed the man sitting in a camping chair, wearing sunglasses, a fake mustache, and holding a beer. Some hikers said the act reminded people that climbing is not only about competition but also about fun. Ric Rosenkranz, who arrived after the ice cream was gone, said the moment was still meaningful. Others said the act showed kindness, created friendship among hikers, and proved strong effort is needed for mountain climbing.
