Elon Musk officially launched Grokipedia on October 27, 2025, as a new online encyclopedia created by his artificial intelligence company, xAI. The platform, which is accessible at Grokipedia.com, aims to serve as a competitor to the well-known website Wikipedia. According to Musk, the project seeks to provide “the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth.” Grokipedia reportedly hosts about 885,000 articles, a figure considerably lower than Wikipedia’s more than seven million English entries. The website features a minimalist design, offering mainly a search bar where users can explore topics such as Taylor Swift or the Buckingham Palace. Musk’s motivation for establishing Grokipedia stemmed from his criticism that Wikipedia contains ideological bias and promotes propaganda, which led him to encourage the public to stop donating to the nonprofit platform.

Grokipedia operates differently from Wikipedia’s volunteer-based editing system. Reports indicate that it is supported by the same xAI model used for Musk’s chatbot, Grok, which generates and reviews article content. However, the process of how entries are created or verified remains unclear. Some analysts noted that several Grokipedia articles appear to replicate or adapt Wikipedia content but include fewer sources. For instance, Grokipedia’s article on the Chola Dynasty has only three references, compared with over one hundred on Wikipedia. The Wikimedia Foundation commented that Wikipedia’s transparency, community oversight, and continuous improvement provide reliability unmatched by newer projects. Critics argue that Grokipedia’s reliance on artificial intelligence raises concerns about accuracy, ideological neutrality, and scholarly credibility. Nevertheless, the launch marks a significant development in the evolving intersection between artificial intelligence and digital knowledge creation.
