Wildlife workers in Rhode Island rescued a large tegu lizard during very cold winter weather this week. A man found the animal in Providence after seeing it move slowly near his driveway and calling local helpers. The lizard is a cold-blooded animal, so snow and ice made the situation cold and risky. Officials said the case showed why fast rescue action is important during winter.

The tegu was taken to an animal hospital for care. Doctors said the lizard was weak after staying outside for a long time, but warm treatment helped it begin to survive. Wildlife groups said the animal may have come from an owner who could no longer care for it. Officials asked people not to leave pets outside and to contact rescue centers instead. They also encouraged residents to report unusual animals quickly so trained workers can help before the weather causes serious harm.
