Cancer Research UK started a two-year trial on a clinical device called the Breath Biopsy, to know if molecules in the mouth could help detect cancer. The research team will need 1,500 participants for this test, including healthy people. Participants will have to breathe into the device for 10 minutes to collect breath samples. Professor Rebecca Fitzgerald, lead trial researcher at the Cancer Research UK Cambridge Center, said that it is important to develop new tools that could help detect cancer earlier and give patients the best opportunity to cure their disease. According to World Health Organization, 18.1 million new cases of cancer were reported in 2018.
