King Muhammad V made a history in Malaysia as the first ruling monarch to abdicate his throne before the end of his reign. This decision was followed after his two-month break where he allegedly married a Russian model from Moscow. However, Sultan Muhammad V remained silent on giving any official announcement. According to a statement from the National Palace in Kuala Lumpur, his departure took immediate effect. Moreover, despite the decision made, the former king still hopes that all Malaysians will preserve its unity.

Malaysia has a rare monarchy system where a king governs just for half a decade. Sultan Muhammad V’s withdrawal from his rank happened only two years after he got the throne in December 2016. Additionally, Perak’s Sultan Nazrin Shah was appointed as the acting king during the absence of King Muhammad V.
