Amazon plans to sell Panorama boxes to companies to check if staff are following safety rules in the workplace during the pandemic, reports state last December 3, Thursday. Amazon said that while the Amazon Web Services (AWS) Panorama is originally designed to automatically check the quality of products, it can also be used to see if employees are wearing masks and socially distancing in the workplace. Amazon added that a company can “get notified immediately about any potential issues or unsafe situations.” Mary Towers, The Trades Union Congress (TUC) policy officer, mentioned that the monitoring tool is another example of how technology is changing the workplace, but she warns about its possible negative effects like harming the employees’ data privacy. However, an Amazon spokeswoman said that the cameras have no facial recognition capabilities.
